ORDER : 1. Response has been filed on behalf of the Union of India on the affidavit of Shri P.K. Sen, Director, Project Tiger, Ministry of Environment and Forests. In the said affidavit, certain suggestions have been made, based on the recommendation of the Subramanian Committee. The State Governments of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal should examine the suggestions contained in the response of the Union of India and take appropriate steps. 2. In the meanwhile, it appears appropriate to us, considering the distressing state of affairs insofar as depletion of tiger population in the country is concerned, to direct the Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forests and Wildlife, Government of India to convene a meeting of the Chief Secretaries of the States which have tiger population in the country to evolve a joint strategy for protecting the tiger from further depletion. 3. The Director, Project Tiger may also be invited to participate in the meeting, if the Secretary, Ministry of Environment considers it necessary. After convening such a meeting within six weeks, the decision regarding the strategy to be adopted shall be reduced to writing and submitted to this Court, supported by an affidavit of the Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forests and Wildlife, Government of India. That shall be done within four weeks after the first meeting is convened. 4. List the matter for further directions after ten weeks.
