Notice of the Report is accepted by learned counsel appearing for the State of Haryana and MoEF. The notice returnable for 9 September, 2005 shall issue to the petitioners. Civil Writ Petition No. 11971/2005 filed before the High Court of Punjab and Haryana. Meanwhile, we hope the State of Haryana would take immediate steps to move appropriate application before the High Court. State of Forest Report 2003 : 3. State of Forest Report 2003 prepared by Forest Survey of India, Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India has been filed by Mr. A. N. Rao, appearing for the said Ministry. The said Report shows that between 2001 and 2003, the dense forest coverage in the country has been reduced by 26,245 sq. kms. In 2001, it was 4,16,809 sq. kms. As per this Report, in 2003 it was 3,90,564 sq. kms. Mr. Harish N. Salve, learned Amicus Curiae points out that the cause of such a vast reduction of dense forest has not been given in this Report. The Statewise breakup is in Table 3.02 at page 19 of the Report. The distinction between very dense forest and open forest is quite evident even by a glance to the pictures at page 10 of the Report. For the present, we direct MoEF to file an affidavit within six weeks explaining the reasons and causes of the disappearance of dense forest to the extent above noted. List thereafter. Mr. Colin Gonsalves, learned senior counsel states that in a meeting which had taken place about a month back, the Chief Secretary had clearly indicated that there was no question of cutting forests, and if need be, the timber can be imported from Malayasia, which would be much cheaper as well. Mr. Gonsalves may file affidavit responding to the application. In the meanwhile, learned counsel for the applicant should discuss the matter with the Chief Secretary having regard to what has been stated by Mr. Gonsalves. 7. List on 9th September, 2005. 8.
