JUDGMENT : 1. Heard learned Attorney General and Mr. Ranjit Kumar, learned Amicus Curiae appointed by this Court in Writ Petition No. 512 of 2002. In the judgment reported in ""In Re: Networking of Rivers", (2012) 3 SCALE 74 : (2012) AIR SCW 3787", in paragraph 77.1 a direction was issued to the Respondent-Union of India in particular, the Ministry of Water Resources, Government of India to forthwith constitute a Special Committee for Interlinking of Rivers specifying the authorities who were to be part of the said Committee. 2. This Contempt Petition was filed by the learned Amicus Curiae pointing out that the direction of this Court in the above referred judgment dated 27th February, 2012 was not duly complied with and that the Special Committee itself was not constituted by the Union of India. 3. After notice being issued on 15th September, 2014, the alleged contemnor/Respondent has filed a counter affidavit on 16th October, 2014. In paragraph (W) it has been stated as under: "Following the approval of the Cabinet Committee, Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation has constituted the Committee, called 'Special Committee for Inter-Linking of Rivers' vide Notification dated 23.09.2014 in Official Gazette. The first meeting of the Special Committee for Inter Linking of Rivers Chaired by Hon'ble Union Minister has also been scheduled to be held on 17.10.2014 for which the notices has been sent to all the Members vide letter dated 14.10.2014. In the above terms the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation has taken a decisive action for convening the first meeting of 'Special Committee for Inter-Linking of Rivers'. (A true copy of the Notification dated 23.09.2014 and letter of Special Committee meeting dated 14.10.2014 is annexed as Annexure No.-52 [Page No 173 to 183] Annexure No: R-53 [Pages 184 to 191])." Reference has also been made to the Notification dated 23rd September, 2014 and the letter of the Special Committee Meeting dated 14th October, 2014 which have been annexed as R-52 and R-53 along with the counter affidavit. 4. Learned Attorney General stated before us that the Special Committee has now been constituted and the first meeting has taken place on 17th October, 2014 in which the learned Amicus Curiae was also present.

He submitted that the Sub-Committee will take earnest efforts to comply with every other directions of this Court made in Paragraph 77 of the above referred to judgment. In the light of the subsequent development, this Contempt Petition is closed and disposed of as such.
